Born in Trinidad and based in London, the poet and novelist Anthony Joseph is gifted with a rare charisma and always seemed set to pioneer a shape-shifting global sound. On stage his Spasm Band deliver stunning performances, and on this, their third album, they’ve caught that magic in the studio.
Rubber Orchestras, produced by Malcolm Catto of The Heliocentrics (and featuring Jerry Dammers on one track), is a sinuous and lively set of 10 compositions, as sulphurous and sensual as the night. Afro-rock, ethio-jazz, afrobeat, free jazz? It’s all this and more, with an effervescent flow powered by Joseph’s vocals. Anthony Joseph – herald and hero.
